What should you never share with someone you just met?

Anything that tells a stranger how to find you or get into your accounts. That means your full name, home or work address, phone number, social media handles, school, passwords and payment details. A first conversation doesn’t need any of them, and MatchPub doesn’t ask you for them either.

It’s easy to share more than you meant when a conversation is going well. A good rule is to keep anything you wouldn’t put on a poster at a bus stop out of the first few chats with someone. If you click, you can keep talking through follow and profile messages, which is exactly why they exist: so nobody has to hand over a number to stay in touch.

How do you leave a chat that feels off?

Tap Next. The match ends immediately and you’re paired with someone new, and the other person doesn’t get an explanation. You don’t owe one. If something about a conversation makes you uncomfortable, leaving early is always the right call, whatever mode you’re in.

Trust small signals. Someone who rushes you, keeps steering the topic somewhere you didn’t want, or gets annoyed when you say no is telling you something. On MatchPub the next conversation is one tap away, so there’s no reason to stay in a bad one.

How does reporting work?

Open the person’s profile and tap Report, then choose the reason that fits. Use it when someone is abusive, explicit, asking for money or contact details, pretending to be someone else, or breaking the community guidelines in any other way. Reports are kept with their details so they can be looked at.

The same profile has a Block button. Use it when you simply don’t want to hear from someone again. You can report and block the same person; one doesn’t replace the other.

What about following and messages?

Following puts someone in your follow list. It doesn’t share your contact details, and they don’t have to follow back; neither do you. If someone follows you and you’d rather not talk, you don’t need to reply, and you can block them from their profile if they keep trying.

Messages from a profile collect in your message list. If one feels pushy or strange, you can leave it unanswered, block the sender or report them. A message that suddenly asks you to move to another app, or includes a link, deserves extra caution; see below.

Camera privacy: what’s behind you

On Video, the other person sees everything your camera sees, not just your face. Before you start, check the frame for mail, ID cards, school or work badges, family photos and a view of your street through the window. Any of these can give away more than you meant.

If you don’t want to be on camera at all, choose Audio or Text before the match starts. The 1 on 1 cam page has a two-minute camera check that covers light, angle and background, and a voice-only match is covered in the guide to calling someone new.

Money requests and links

If someone you met on MatchPub asks for money, gift cards, crypto or payment details, for any reason, leave the conversation and report them. The same goes for links to other sites and requests to “continue on another app”. However good the story sounds, a stranger asking for money is the clearest warning sign there is.

Coins on MatchPub are bought only in your own wallet inside the app. Nobody needs to send you anything, and nobody from MatchPub will ask for your password or card details in a chat.

Who MatchPub is for

People who want to meet someone new and treat them decently. That’s really the whole requirement: curiosity, and the manners you’d use with someone you’d like to see again. Everyone else tends to get Next-ed quickly, and repeat offenders get reported. The about page explains why MatchPub is built around one person at a time, and the MatchPub home page has the overview.

Safety: quick answers

Is MatchPub safe?

Safe enough when you keep personal details private, leave any chat that turns into requests, and use report and block on the person’s profile.

Can strangers see my location?

Not your address or exact location. They only learn what you tell them or what your camera shows, so check your background before a video match.

What should I do if someone asks for money?

Leave the conversation and report them from their profile. Nobody you meet here needs your money or payment details.

Can I block someone?

Yes. Open their profile and tap Block. You can also report them if they broke the rules.

Does following someone share my details?

No. Following puts them in your follow list; your contact details stay private, and they don’t have to follow back.

How do I report a user?

Open their profile, tap Report and pick the reason. Reports are kept with their details so they can be looked at.

There’s an empty stool next to someone new.

One person, one conversation, and nobody else in the room. Follow them if it clicks.
