One-on-One Video Chat: The Quickest Way to Know If It Clicks
On MatchPub a video match puts you face to face with one new person, and the first minute tells you most of what you need. Here’s how to spend it, and what to do when it goes well.

What makes a one-on-one video chat different?
Two cameras, one person on each side, and nobody watching. A one-on-one video chat on MatchPub puts you face to face with someone you haven’t met, picked at random, and keeps everyone else out. There’s no grid of faces and no audience, just the two of you deciding whether to keep talking.
That changes how people behave. In a group, you perform a little for the room; with one person, you listen. You notice when they laugh before the end of your sentence, when they look away to think, when the answer is longer than the question needed. A 1 on 1 video chat strips the conversation down to what two people actually do with each other, which is why it’s such a quick way to find out whether you get along.
The first minute
What happens in the first sixty seconds?
Most of the decision. Within a minute you usually know whether you want to keep going, follow, or move on, and all three are normal outcomes. The minute splits into three parts, and knowing them takes most of the awkwardness out of meeting someone new on camera.
0 to 10 seconds: the picture arrives
Their face loads, maybe a little blurry, maybe mid-sip of coffee. Say hello before you judge anything. A smile and your first name buys you the next twenty seconds; silence while you both stare doesn’t.
10 to 30 seconds: ask something real
Skip “where are you from” for now. Ask about something you can see: the guitar behind them, the snow on their window, the cat walking across the desk. It shows you’re paying attention to this person, not to a list of questions.
30 to 60 seconds: decide
By now you’ve heard how they answer. If it’s flowing, keep going. If it’s good enough that you’d want to talk again, follow them. If it’s flat, say “nice to meet you” and tap Next. None of these needs an apology.
People who get the most out of a 1v1 video session tend to treat that minute as a test of the conversation, not of each other. A shaky start with someone friendly often turns into the best talk of the night, once the first nervous laugh is out of the way.
How do you start a 1v1 video chat on MatchPub?
Open the match screen, keep the mode switch at the bottom on Video, allow your camera and microphone when the browser asks, and press start. One person joins. If the conversation isn’t working, tap Next and someone new appears on your screen a moment later.
01
Choose Video
On the match screen, the switch at the bottom has three modes. Leave it on Video.
02
Allow camera and microphone
Your browser asks the first time. Say yes to both, or the other person sees a black square.
03
Start, and say hi first
One person appears. Greet them before you size them up, and tap Next if it isn’t working.
It works the same on a phone and a laptop. A 1 v 1 video chat on a phone feels closer because the screen is in your hand; on a laptop, raise the screen so the lens sits at eye level instead of looking up your nose. How to set up the camera side of things, from light to background, is covered on the 1 on 1 cam page.
What a face tells you that texting never will
You can text someone for a week and still not know whether you’d get on. Ten seconds on camera answers questions you didn’t think to ask: whether they smile with their eyes, whether they wait for you to finish, whether your jokes land or float past.
It also helps with the awkward part. When you can see someone, you can tell the difference between a pause that means “I’m thinking” and one that means “I’m bored”. You can see when they’re about to say something and stop talking. You can tell when a joke landed, even if the laugh is quiet or comes a second late, and when it’s time to change the subject before the silence gets long. Text loses most of that; video keeps it.
That’s why a one on one videochat is often where people start when they want to know quickly. A video chat with someone in another time zone can feel strange for about fifteen seconds and then completely ordinary, because a face does the explaining that words would take an hour to do.
Is 1 vs 1 video chat just the two of you?
Yes. Every match is exactly two people, you and the person on the other side, with no group view and no spectators. Nobody joins halfway through, and leaving takes one tap. If you want more people, MatchPub isn’t built for that; it only ever puts one person in front of you at a time.
That’s the whole idea: not a meeting, not a party, just one conversation with one person who chose to be there too. It suits people who find groups tiring, and it suits shy people more than they expect, because there’s only one reaction to read.
No camera today? Switch modes
Some evenings you don’t want to be seen, and that’s fine. Before you start a match, move the switch at the bottom from Video to Audio or Text. Audio turns your next match into a call with no picture at all, and the page about how to call strangers without swapping numbers has openers for those first few seconds. Text needs no camera or microphone; the 1 on 1 text chat guide covers a slower way in.
You can come back to Video for the next match. The mode belongs to the match, not to you, so there’s nothing to change in your settings.
Clicked with someone: keep the thread
Follow them before you tap Next. That one tap puts them in your follow list, so you can find their profile later. From the profile you can send a message, which is the easiest way to say “that was fun, talk again?” without pressure.
Their profile also lets you call them on camera later. The whole path, from first match to someone you follow, is laid out on the page about how MatchPub works.
Do you need to pay for a 1v1 video chat?
Not at the start. Your first matches cost nothing, and a video match counts like any other; once the free ones are gone, each new match draws on coins in your wallet. VIP is optional, and the details of what’s free to start are on their own page.
