Three steps get you into a conversation; one more keeps the good ones. Here’s the whole flow in the order you’ll meet it, plus what MatchPub doesn’t do.
Video, voice or text · Guest entry · Free to start
🇳🇬 NigeriaSay hello to someone new↗
What do you need before your first match?
A browser and a reason to talk. MatchPub runs in Safari, Chrome or any modern browser on a phone or computer, and you come in as a guest, so there’s no form first. Video needs your camera and microphone, Audio needs only the microphone, and Text needs no permissions at all.
That’s genuinely all. No download, no profile to fill in before you begin, and no payment details. If you’d like MatchPub as an icon, the MatchPub app page shows how to add it to your home screen.
Step 1: choose Video, Audio or Text
The match screen has a switch at the bottom with three modes. Video puts you face to face; Audio is a voice-only call; Text is a typed conversation. You choose before each match, and the choice only applies to that match, so you can switch whenever your mood or your surroundings change.
Pick the mode from the switch at the bottom of the match screen.
02
Meet one person, or tap Next
One person joins. Stay while it’s good; Next finds someone new.
03
Follow the ones worth keeping
Follow before you leave, then message them from their profile later.
Step 2: meet one person, or tap Next
One person joins you, and only one. There are no groups and no spectators. Say hi, see whether the conversation picks up, and stay as long as it’s good for both of you. If it isn’t working, tap Next: the match ends straight away and you’re paired with someone new. Next doesn’t need a reason.
Matches are random, which is part of the fun and part of the point. Some people prefer to set their camera up before they start; the 1 on 1 cam page has a two-minute check for that. And if you used to spend evenings on the old one-on-one random sites, the Omegle-style 1 on 1 page explains what’s the same and what’s new.
Step 3: follow the ones worth keeping
Following needs an account. You can match as a guest, but the first time you tap follow, MatchPub asks you to log in before it adds anyone to your list. Guest entry stops at that point because a follow list has to belong to an account you can come back to.
When a conversation is good enough that you’d want another one, tap follow before you leave. The person goes into your follow list, and you can find their profile there later. Following puts them in your follow list. It doesn’t share your contact details, and they don’t have to follow back.
This is the step that makes MatchPub different from a plain random chat. Without it, the best conversation of the night is gone when the tab closes. With it, you have a way back. If you’d like to know how and when to follow without being pushy, the guide to keeping a chat with her going covers the timing.
Where do your messages live?
In your message list. Open someone’s profile, from your follow list or the online list, and send a message; that conversation then appears in your message list, where you can pick it up any time. Text messages can be translated automatically, which helps when the two of you write in different languages.
Each profile also has a button that calls the person with your camera on. There’s no voice-only button on a profile, so if you’d rather talk without video, agree on it in a message first. On an iPhone and used to FaceTime? The page on random FaceTime compares the two.
Browsing instead of matching: the online list
If you’d rather choose than leave it to chance, open the online list. It shows people who are around, split into Popular, Online, New and Following tabs, and you can browse it by language. Tap a face to open the profile, and from there send a message or call.
Many people mix the two: random matches when they feel like a surprise, the online list when they want to find someone specific, such as someone who speaks Spanish or someone they followed last week.
Where do coins and rewards fit in?
At the start, they don’t. A new account comes with free matches, and claiming a reward when one appears adds more. Once those are gone, matches draw on coins in your wallet. VIP is an optional monthly membership on top, not something you need to start matching.
A place to watch people who are live. You can open a room, watch, send comments and gifts, and start a one-on-one from the room when someone catches your interest. You can’t broadcast yourself; the Live tab is for watching. It sits next to the other tabs on the video page.
MatchPub isn’t built around live rooms, so treat the tab as a gentle way in on evenings when you’d rather watch for a while before talking.
What MatchPub doesn’t do
Knowing the limits saves you time. MatchPub has no group chats or chat rooms; everything is one on one. There’s no swiping through profiles to match. Video and voice calls aren’t translated; only text messages are. Users can’t start their own live broadcast. And there’s no published number of free matches, because that can change.
If any of those are what you’re looking for, MatchPub probably isn’t the right fit, and that’s fine. If one person at a time and a way to find them again sounds right, the safety habits are worth a two-minute read before you start, and the MatchPub home page has the overview.
