1-on-1 Text Chat: Let the Connection Start in Words

When talking out loud isn’t an option, type with one person instead. Take it slowly, keep a rhythm, and move to camera only if you both want to.

What is a 1 on 1 text chat on MatchPub?

A typed conversation with one person, chosen at random, with no camera and no microphone involved. You pick Text on the match screen, start, and someone joins you in a private thread. Nobody sees your face or hears your voice, and nobody else reads along. When it runs out, Next finds someone new.

It’s the slowest of the three modes, and that’s the point. A one on one text chat gives you time to think before you answer, to reread what they wrote, and to say something you might not have managed out loud.

When is texting better than talking?

Whenever speaking isn’t possible or isn’t comfortable: a flatmate asleep behind a thin wall, a late bus full of people, a lunch break at a shared desk, or a day when your voice is tired. Text also suits people whose spoken English feels shaky and who want a moment to find the right word.

Some people just like it better. They’re funnier in writing, or they like that nobody is watching their face while they decide whether a joke landed. A one-on-one text chat lets them be at their best from the first line instead of warming up for ten minutes.

Three messages

What’s the three-message rhythm?

Respond to what they said, add one detail of your own, then ask something back. Three moves, usually in one message. It keeps a typed conversation balanced, because each of you gets something to reply to and nobody is stuck doing all the asking.

Example one

They write: “Just got home from a double shift.” You reply: “Ouch, both of them on your feet? I had a long one too, but mostly in meetings. What do you do when you get home, food or sleep first?”

Example two

They write: “It’s snowing here, first time this year.” You reply: “Jealous, it’s still 70 degrees here and I’m sick of it. Is it the pretty kind of snow or the kind you have to shovel?”

Compare that with “cool” or “haha nice”, which leave the other person nothing to work with. One-word replies are where most text conversations die. The rhythm isn’t a script; it’s a habit that stops you from making someone else do all the work.

How do you start a 1v1 text chat?

Open the match screen, choose Text from the switch at the bottom, and start. One person joins and you can type straight away. If the replies are slow, flat or rude, tap Next and you’re matched with someone new. It works in any browser on a phone or a computer.

  1. Choose Text

The switch is at the bottom of the match screen. Text needs no camera or microphone permission.

  2. Start

One person joins the conversation. Nobody else can see or join the thread.

  3. Type, or tap Next

If the replies are slow or flat, Next finds someone new.

From words to faces, only if you both want

A text conversation doesn’t have to stay text, and it doesn’t have to change either. If you both want to see each other, start your next match on Video, or follow the person and call them from their profile later. If one of you would rather keep typing, keep typing.

Some people move to a voice call first because it feels like a smaller step. The guide on how to call strangers covers Audio. What the first minute on camera feels like is on the one-on-one video chat page.

What should stay out of a one on one text chat?

Your phone number, social media handles, home address, workplace and anything else that tells someone how to find you. Also, don’t open links from people you just met, however friendly they seem. Text feels private, which is exactly why people sometimes share more in writing than they would out loud.

If someone asks for those details, for money or for photos, that’s the moment to tap Next or report them from their profile. The safety page goes through the rest of the habits worth keeping.

Can you keep texting after the match ends?

Yes. Follow the person before you tap Next, and later you can open their profile and send a message. Every conversation you start from a profile shows up in your message list, so the thread is there whenever either of you comes back. Text messages can also be translated automatically.

This is where a slow start often pays off. People who met in a 1v1 text chat tend to pick up easily in messages, because they’ve already found a rhythm. The page on how MatchPub works shows the whole path from match to message list, and the MatchPub home page covers the rest.
