About MatchPub

MatchPub is named after the place where strangers have always met: a pub. The idea is the same, one person at a time, with one thing fixed. The good ones don’t have to vanish when the evening ends.

Why a pub?

Because the best conversations with strangers have always happened in places like one. You sit down, the person on the next stool says something about the game or the rain, and an hour later you’re still talking. You didn’t choose them from a list. That’s exactly what MatchPub tries to recreate online.

A pub has a few qualities worth copying. Nobody needs your details to sit down. Conversations start sideways, about whatever is in front of you, not with a questionnaire. And leaving is easy: you finish your drink, say goodnight, and nobody takes it personally.

It also has one big flaw, and that flaw is the reason MatchPub exists. When the evening ends, the good company is gone. You meant to ask their name properly; you didn’t want to seem strange by asking for a number; the moment passed. Most people can remember at least one conversation like that, with someone they never saw again.

What is MatchPub, stripped down to the basics?

MatchPub is a 1-on-1 chat that runs in your browser. It pairs you at random with one new person at a time, by video, voice or text, and gives you a simple way to find the people you liked again: follow them, message them from their profile, and talk again whenever you’re both around.

Everything else supports that. The online list lets you see who’s around and message someone directly. Next ends a match and finds someone new. Guest entry means you can start without a form. And the whole thing works on a phone or a computer without installing anything. People from more than 50 countries use it, so the person you meet might be next door or several time zones away.

Why only one person at a time?

Because conversations get better as the audience gets smaller. In a group, people perform for the room; with one person, they listen and answer. MatchPub never puts a third person into a match, never shows a grid of faces, and never lets anyone watch from the side.

This also keeps things calmer. There’s only one reaction to read, one person to be polite to, and one decision to make: stay, follow or move on. Shy people often find that easier than a crowd, and confident people find the conversations go further. It’s why every mode on MatchPub, Video, Audio and Text, works the same way.

It changes what people talk about, too. With nobody else listening, conversations drift to the things people actually care about: a job they’re thinking of quitting, a city they want to move to, a band nobody else in their town has heard of. Those conversations are the ones worth a second round, and they rarely happen in front of an audience.

There is one place on MatchPub where more people gather: the Live tab, where you can watch someone who’s live alongside others. Even there, the way into a real conversation is one-on-one.

Why does follow matter more than speed?

Because a fast match doesn’t help much if you can’t find the good ones again. Many random chat sites compete on how quickly they connect you. MatchPub cares more about what happens after a good conversation: whether you can find that person again tomorrow without swapping phone numbers. Follow is the answer to that.

Think about how connections actually form. Rarely in one conversation. Usually it’s the second or third, when you remember what they said last time and they remember you. A random chat with no memory never gets there. MatchPub keeps the random first meeting, then gives you a path to the second: follow, a message from their profile, and another conversation when you’re both free.

We call that path the Connection Ladder on the MatchPub home page, and every guide on the site comes back to it. The page on how MatchPub works walks through it step by step.

What doesn’t MatchPub do?

Several things, on purpose. There are no group chats or chat rooms, because everything is one on one. There’s no swiping through photos to decide who deserves a hello. We don’t promise unending free use, and we don’t post invented reviews or ratings. Users can’t start their own live broadcasts.

Some of these are features other sites have, and they suit other people. Leaving them out keeps MatchPub focused on one thing: meeting a person, and being able to meet them again. Every feature that made it in had to answer one question: does it help two people have a better conversation, or find each other for the next one? Being clear about the limits also means nobody signs up expecting something that isn’t there.

The same goes for money. The start is free, rewards add more, and coins come in later. That’s explained plainly on the page about where free ends, with no fine print to dig for.

The three ways in

Every match starts with a choice at the bottom of the match screen: Video, Audio or Text. They exist because people meet differently. Some want to see a face straight away; the one-on-one video chat guide is for them. Some talk better when nobody is looking, which is what Audio is for. Some want time to think between lines and pick Text, sometimes because a flatmate is asleep next door.

None of the modes is the “real” one with the others as warm-ups. A friendship that starts in Text and stays in Text is just as much a MatchPub conversation as one that starts on camera. You choose again before each match, and the choice belongs to that match only. Plenty of evenings start on Text and end on Video, or the other way round, depending on how the conversation goes and where you happen to be sitting.

How we think about safety

Meeting strangers online works best when people can leave easily and don’t have to give much away. That’s the starting point for how MatchPub is built. You don’t need a real name to begin. Next ends a conversation and moves you on. Report and Block sit on every profile. And follow means you never have to hand over a phone number to stay in touch with someone.

The rest depends on habits, and we’re upfront about that. Keep your details to yourself, leave conversations that turn into requests, and check what your camera shows. The safety page goes through each of these, and the community guidelines set out what everyone agrees to when they use MatchPub.

Where MatchPub runs

In your browser, on whatever you already have. MatchPub works in Safari on an iPhone, Chrome on Android and any modern browser on a laptop or desktop. There’s no download, no app store update to wait for, and nothing to install before your first conversation.

If you’d like it to feel like an app, add it to your home screen; it then opens in its own window from an icon. The steps for each device are on the MatchPub app page. Video uses your camera and microphone, Audio only your microphone, and Text needs no permissions at all.

How to reach us

Questions, suggestions, problems with a payment, or something you’d like us to look at: write to [email protected]. The contact page lists a few quick fixes for common problems and what to include in your message so we can help faster.

We answer as soon as we can. If you’re writing about another user, include what happened and roughly when; it makes things much quicker to sort out. For problems with the camera or microphone, the quick fixes on the contact page usually work before you even need to write.
